Why Therapy

We all have times when we struggle with feeling  as though  we are less than who we  truly are or feel separate and alone.  We may occasionally feel lost and disheartened, cynical, angry, and afraid in response to the paths our lives have taken. It is at these times that  we might need help reconnecting with ourselves  in order to  come to know the meaning of our experiences and the strengths we have to help us better navigate them.  I believe that everything we  need in order to heal is within us. It is just a matter of connecting with someone who can guide us back to ourselves. Too often we believe or are told by others that our very human responses to life serve as evidence that something is wrong with us, that somehow we are defective when in fact, our feelings are guides that lead us to make important and necessary changes in our lives. With validation and encouragement, we are able to lovingly support ourselves through difficulties so that our healing can begin.

The Healing Process

The word heal is derived from a Greek word  meaning to make whole.  I believe that most mental and emotional distress originates in being disconnected from oneself or parts of oneself.   When we are able to accept and integrate all parts of ourselves into the greater whole, we are able to heal.  Sometimes it is a matter of identifying the blocks that keep us from self-acceptance. Other times, it is identifying or recognizing parts of ourselves that  have been forgotten or were not allowed to be seen. Compassionately connecting with our full selves allows us to transcend our previously held notions of who we are. We can, then,  throw off the constraints of fear and self-condemnation and realize our true potential.  Thus, healing is the process of unearthing and connecting with our true essence.  It is the journey  back to ourselves.

What You Can Expect at Your First Session

My office is conveniently located in the North Hills of Pittsburgh at the In the Moment Center for Wellness. On your first visit, we identify and address the issues that are important to you. There will be some paperwork to fill out and we will focus on the challenges that have brought you here and past experiences that may have had an influence on them. As therapy continues, I will address issues that I think are important, as they come up. The content of our sessions will be confidential. Our therapy will be a collaborative process that is guided by your needs and preferences.
